A technician in the city, who posted her profile for her second marriage on the Telugu Matrimony site, has been cheated to the tune of 10 lakh, apparently by Nigerian crooks.
Recently, the 34-year-old Begumpet victim, who has a son from a previous marriage, approached Hyderabad Cybercrime Police stating that she was divorced and a few months ago she was introduced to a Mohal Kumar from the United States via Telugu. Wedding. Over time, they developed sympathy for each other and started chatting and talking on the phone. He told her that he was a Gujarti born and raised in the United States and that his mother currently resides in their hometown of Gujarat.
A few weeks ago, the duo decided to tie the knot and “ Mohal ” promised to complete the visa process for his visit to the United States before getting married and other documentation work related to their marriage, for which he asked the wife to send ₹ 2 lakh. She transferred the amount. Later he asked her to send an additional 2 lakh to his mother’s bank account in India for house repair work as he was facing difficulties in currency transfer and she transferred the money again , said Cyber Crimes ACP KVM Prasad.
Mohal told the woman he was coming to India to meet her and bought expensive gifts, including gold jewelry and luxury watches. “After arriving in India, he called her again to tell her that customs officials caught him for bringing in several expensive goods and asked her to pay customs duties. Believing in his tricks, she again transferred another 6 lakh to free him, only to realize that she was deceived by a cybercriminal, ”Mr. Prasad said. Again, the suspect called her to transfer an additional 2.5 lakh to secure the release of the goods.
Based on his complaint, the police have registered a case and suspect the involvement of Nigerian cybercrime gangs. “She believed her words for a bright future for her son and a new life for herself in America and was cheated,” Mr. Prasad said.
